When a 12-year-old Jonathan tried to turn to his family, he said, they ignored him. It is a source of embarrassment for him, though his son has gone on the record in many interviews saying it was written about a family friend who sexually abused him. The song caused many to assume Rick Davis (Jonathan's father) had molested his son. However, he denied it was about physical or sexual abuse at the hands of his father, and the title and some concepts within the song stem from his parents not believing him. The band's singer, Jonathan Davis, has stated that the song is about his painful experience of being molested as a child and not being believed.
His parents didn't believe him, and Mother has not cooked Meatloaf to this day.The guilt has been there and thus the emotion in the song. Jon tried to explain what happened with neighbor and the Cheeseburger, and the shake which really filled him up. His Dad scolded him because Meatloaf was is favorite day and now mother would no longer cook it because because her feelings were hurt. This hurt his Mother's feelings and she thought Jon didn't like her Meatloaf anymore. Afterward, the neighbor dropped him off and his mother made the meatloaf but Jon was not hungry now. Jon ate a Double Bacon Cheeseburger with fries and a shake. The neighbor, who was a female, saw Jon was hungry so took him to a drive-thru Burger joint. Jon had forgot his keys so went to a neighbors house because it was raining. His Mom promised him meatloaf with potatoes and gravy, which coincidentally was Jon's favorite. One day his parents were late coming home from work.
I can't even listen to the song because it will make me cry Never heard anyone truly submit themselves into their art like that. It shows the travesty that his mother was to him. Then the darker low-tuned guitar plays over top of it, to show that it is only a dream, and the reality is that his mother was not there to hold him and tell him it was alright. She sings this lullaby bringing about the symoblism of motherly care and sanctuary. Fading in is the sound of a mother singing a lullaby (and I like to think of this little boy sitting with his hands in his arms wrapped around his knees, his mother putting her arm around him). Then the music stops and you hear him weeping. Then starts back up again in the same rhythm, thus giving the emotional image of the raping that continues. Right after the last line of the last chorus (through absolute tears) "mommy why?!" sob sob sniffle, etc.
Other things to point out about the song was just the music alone. They refused to acept that it was happening to him. What hasn't been clearly pointed out here is that not only did his parents not believe him, but they labeled him as a liar.
